Bidriware
Bidriware - Originating in Bidar, Karnataka in 14th century during the rule of Bahmani Sultans. The name Bidriware originates from the township Bidar which has still the rich heritage of unique metal ware. Bidriware is combination of blackened alloy of zinc & copper and inlaid with thin sheets of pure silver. Bidriware has been aptly made to suit contemporary taste such as cufflinks, bangles, goblets, vases, ashtrays, ornaments, knick-knacks, trinket boxes, hugga bases, nameplates and more

The basic material of Bidriware is an alloy of zinc and copper in the proportion of 16:1. It is on this alloy that artistic designs in pure silver are engraved. The Bidriware undergoes an eight-stage process. The 8 stages are molding, smoothening by file, designing by chisels, engraving by chisel and hammer, pure silver inlaying, smoothening again, buffing and finally oxidizing by soil and ammonium chloride. Now the Bidri item is ready for the final step of making the surface permanently black so that the silver inlay design will stand out in bright contrast against the dark background. There is a particular type of soil found in the inner depths of ruins which are three hundred years old, in buildings where neither sunlight nor rain has fallen for hundreds of years. This soil, when mixed with ammonium chloride and water, produces a very special paste which is rubbed onto the heated Bidri article. The paste darkens the body of the piece, but has no effect on the silver inlay. As the paste is rinsed off, the design springs dramatically into view, the shining silver resplendent against the black surface. Finally, oil is rubbed on the piece to deepen the black matt coating.

Cleaning Tips:
With proper care and maintenance, Bidri articles can be kept bright and beautiful indefinitely. Never use Soaps, salts and acid to clean Bidriware. Clean Bidriware only with water and a soft cloth. You can use silver polish to shine the inlay work and then rub vegetable oil to sparkle the entire surface.

Gifting Ideas
Bidriware artifacts can be gifted as mementos to the panel of guests in any event, Birthdays (Usually who is celebrating 25th + birthday, ideally women like these gifts.) Bidriware is a symbol of prestige. Ratan Tata has presented US President Barak Obama a Bidriware gift during latter’s recent India visit.

Also special invitations through Bidriware were made for the engagement of Bollywood stars Abhishek Bachchan and Karishma Kapoor.
Brassware
The Brassware handicrafts industry is an integral part of the handicrafts and cottage industry of India. India is recognized all over world for its superlative range of decorative brass handicrafts. Brass is the alloy of Copper and Zinc. Brasswares make nice decorative things. We can maintain Brassware and restore its elegance by following some simple caring tips

Cleaning Tips
Cleaning or dusting of Brassware is must and should be done on daily basis. Check for the finger prints and wipe it completely or else it would be clearly visible and bring down the luster of Brassware. After dusting the Brassware take the clean cotton and damp it in lukewarm water and clean the brassware with it.

Polishing Brassware
Brassware reacts with air and tarnishes over a period of time. To avoid this, use a branded polish to polish and restore the sparkling shine of Brassware. Just get a lacquer spray. Read the user manual and follow it completely. Use a cotton cloth and apply or press all over the Brassware and leave it for 15-20 minutes and wipe the Brasswares again with fresh cotton cloth and the sparkling shine is back!!

Ammonia
Using Ammonia will be perfect to ensure that the luster and shine stays long for long time. Just put small amount of Ammonia on soft cotton cloth and wipe the brassware. You can also make water-ammonia solutions and clean the tarnished Brassware.

Home Cleanser Take a table spoon of vinegar and mix some salt to it. Put this solution on the stains or on entire Brassware. Leave it for 24 hours. After 24 hours, remove the paste and use ammonia-water solution to clean it. Finally give lemon oil coating to get the lost luster and shining.

Storage Tips A simple way to preserve Brassware artifacts is to store them properly. Maintain an even, low humidity where metal objects are kept; ideally below 55% Relative Humidity (RH). Rapidly fluctuating temperatures will cause coatings to fail as the metal expands and contracts; this problem is most acute in the case of artifacts composed of sheet metal.

In most homes, an even environment is difficult to ensure, but generally speaking, basements in our area are damp in the summer and therefore should not be used for the storage of metal artifacts. Humidity sensors are available for those who wish to check conditions near their collections.

Do not allow dust to accumulate on stored objects. You can protect your collection by storing it on shelves padded with Ethafoam. You may choose to drape plastic or cloth curtains around storage shelves but do not place metal artifacts in sealed plastic bags; the danger of moisture condensation on the metal outweighs the benefit of dust protection.
Bronzeware Artifacts
Bronze is a metal alloy consisting primarily of copper, usually with tin as the main additive. It is hard and brittle. Bronze metal artifacts may have looked shiny and new in the beginning but the longer they are exposed to air and moisture, the greener and duller they become. Bronze reacts with moisture (oxidation) to form a greenish layer on its surface, called patina. Here are few ways to clean and polish your bronze artifacts.

Cleaning Tips
Pour a tablespoon of baking soda into a small dish and squeeze some lemon juice over it. The pasty mixture will bubble, but will quickly settle down. Use a small piece of soft cloth to rub this paste onto your bronze piece. Rub until you're satisfied with the clean. You can leave the mixture on the item while you work on the other pieces. Use a small piece of soft cloth to rub this paste onto your bronze piece. Wash the mixture off under running water, then dry and buff with a clean soft cloth.

Cleaning with Vinegar
Combine equal amounts of flour and salt in a small dish and then add enough vinegar to make a paste. Smear the paste onto the bronze pieces and let stand for about 30 minutes. Wash the paste off under running water, then dry and buff with a clean soft cloth.

The recommended method of cleaning bronze is by using all natural, universal cleaning agents like lemon or vinegar. However, if you desire a high luster effect, you may need to use commercially prepared metal cleaners that have chemicals specifically formulated to remove patina. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and use chemical metal cleaners only in well-ventilated areas.
