Kinhal Fruit Tray.Kinhal is the traditional craft of exquisite wood carving originating from the town of Kinhal in North Karnataka. Earlier, figures depicting people involved in various occupations were popular. But today, the preference is for figures, animals and birds. Garuda, the epic bird, and Lord Ganesha sitting on a throne are popular.Kinhal artisans, known as chitragars, use a paste made from tamarind seeds and pebbles to stick the various parts of the carved item together. A mixture of pebble powder and liquid gum is used to emboss ornaments and jewellery on the figures.Kinhal crafts in natural colours are available as toys, murals and wall hangings depicting puranic themes like Dashavataras, Navagrahas and Ashta-dikhpalas.
